Telemarketers, PLEASE stop calling me!

Telemarketing guyWhen I worked for my Mom about 20 yrs. ago with Olan Mills Photography Studios, I had to make cold calls to sell photography packages. Honestly, I hated it. I don’t like high pressure (buying a car, large appliance, whatever). I didn’t like having to call people in the middle of their evening or Saturday morning newspaper reading to sell them a year’s worth of pictures. I am sure that I disappointed my Mom back then. I just wasn’t a good telemarketer.

I realize it is a job. I know there are worse jobs out there. However, this one really bothers people in the comfort and privacy of their home. At the end of a long day, you want nothing more than to sit down and enjoy being with your family. In the midst of taking a bite of your mashed potatoes and pot roast, the phone rings. It isn’t a beloved relative asking a quick question. It is a stranger asking if you had time to take a survey or would you be in the market to buy “x”.

These calls never come at an opportune time. They always come right when you are having the family meal, when your favorite television show is “getting to the good part”, or when you are tucking in your darling angels to bed.Telemarketing phone

I recently called our phone company about our high phone bill. We really don’t call anyone with our home phone any longer. We always use our cell phones. We would disconnect our home phone, but it is nice to have in case of an emergency and we need to call 9-1-1. The phone company took off the Call-Waiting feature and a few other things. I am not sure, but I think they also put us down for “Call them whenever they seem busy” and posted our phone number to every sales firm across the U.S.

We have been getting more and more telemarketing calls lately. I’m not making this up. We seem to be flooded by them. Well, I have had it. I put our phone number and cell phones into the National Do Not Call List www.donotcall.gov. I also went to our state do not call list website and registered there. I found that if telemarketers continue to call you, you can report their phone number and company name. I am not sure if anything will come of it, but it made me feel like I was getting the class bully into trouble.

Take that you 866 numbers! Next time, let me call you when Lost is on!
