Oh! How we love Rick Riordan!

May 2nd, 2007

Titan's CurseWe went to Book People last night to see/meet author, Rick Riordan. Although, Mr. Riordan has written many books for adults (the Tres Navarre series), I think he hit the spot when he started the Percy Jackson series for kids.

This series is based on Percy, a boy with ADHD that seems to have a pretty boring life. He lives with his hardworking mom (she works in a candy store) and he is always getting into trouble at school. As the book gets going, he finds out that he is actually very special. He is the son of the Greek god Poseidon. Percy also finds out that he can manipulate water and communicate with horses (something he got from his father). He also finds out that there are many children of greek gods in the world. They attend a place called “Camp Half Blood”.

Mr. Riordan’s books are full of great myths and creatures. They are silly and really grab the reader. The thing that I love about them is that they encourage “tweens” (the age between 9-12) to research greek mythology. When I taught greek myths, my child was bored to tears. After reading the first two books in the Percy Jackson series (The Lightning Thief and Sea of Monsters), our world opened up. We HAD to buy D’Aulaire’s book of Greek Myths after that. What a joy to find a fictional book that inspires children to do their own research.

We have just started reading the third book in the series, The Titan’s Curse. Mr. Riordan says that there will be five books in the series. The fourth installment will be out in Spring 2008.Rick Riordan

After spending 2.5 hours at Book People (amongst AT LEAST 400 kids), I think Mr. Riordan has found a wonderful way to communicate to tweens. We didn’t have the patience (or energy) to wait another hour to get Mr. Riordan to sign our book. Although, we did get to hear him read a part of his new book. That was a treat.

Mr. Riordan, keep up the wonderful work. For our family, you are right up there with J.K. Rowling, Mr. Dahl, Mr. Silverstein, and Mr. Sachar. We love you.
